The NBA has the most followers in Social Media of any sports league in the nation. Teams are encouraged to interact with their fans in Social Media and the Dallas Mavericks are one of the leaders in this space.
The Mavericks Facebook & Twitter pages have over 2 million followers which makes them 7th best in the NBA. The Mavericks not only share video content, information, and stats but also have creative contests with their fans. One of the most popular contests is giving away free tickets to fans that dress and act the rowdiest outside the arena on game nights.
Interview with Paul Monroe, VP of Marketing & Communications
Dallas Mavericks’ VP of Marketing and Communications Paul Monroe talks about the importance of Social Media and how the team utilizes it with their fans. Chris Yates with Huddle Productions did this video interview.
Video Transcription Below
Chris Yates: What are you noticing with the digital and interactive? You guys are, heck [Mark] Cuban was leading this thing in the blog way before anybody else, what are you noticing are the biggest challenges or the most interesting challenges for you guys.
Paul Monroe: The interesting thing with it is the growth to it. It’s staggering when you start looking at the numbers; where we were four years ago, even three years ago. You even start looking at it every couple of months and see the growth. A lot of the growth is on the Twitter side, on the Facebook, things have evolved and you see a lot of new things. Just the the fanfare, and what we can give the fans, we talked earlier as we were walking around. Just the devices you can capture just on your mobile phone; how you can capture video, how you can capture interviews, do live streams. That allows us, we’ve got such a great team, internally to get close with the players and get a little more personal and fans like that. Then it’s taking it and doing more events with it. Doing social parties here, getting them and allowing these fans who have been interacting and chatting with each other on a game night or if they saw a new video or they saw a new animation that we released they thought was really cool. Let’s get Bob and Mary and let them meet each other out on the plaza after a game to do some more ticket promotions and make it a vehicle where we can maybe sell some tickets, maybe we can sell some merchandise and somewhat monetize it. That’s kind of the next level.
