How to Get Noticed In Your Sports Job Search

Are you invisible in your sports job search? Or do you feel that way because all the sports employers you contact ignore you?

Welcome to the club. We’ve all been there.

Today I’m going to show you how to not only grab the attention of the employer, but also make yourself standout from the competition.

In order to get hired, you have to get noticed first.

Why Your Sports Job Search Is Getting Ignored

Dont be boring in your job search

Don’t take this personal. But you’re boring. Well, not “You” per se. Just your marketing. You need to understand that you’re competing with thousands of other people just as passionate about sports as you are.

With that in mind, what are you doing to express that passion in an interesting and relevant way?

What I’m about to suggest is something you’ve probably heard many times. But this time I want you to do something about it. Because it’s a fairly simple way to help you standout among the masses.

The One Thing You Must Do… NOW!

In order to get noticed – and command attention – in the sports job marketplace, you need to create your own sports business blog. Yes, a blog. There’s no doubt you’ve been told how valuable a blog can be to your sports career, but for some reason you just haven’t started one.

Maybe you don’t have a blog because you’re not sure what (exactly) to blog about. Or maybe you don’t know where to begin. Or the idea of creating more homework for yourself is the last thing you feel like doing.

It’s easy to find excuses when you’re just getting started. But I want to encourage you to make a decision right now to let go of the excuses, and take charge of your sports career.

Young Successful Sports Executives Do This

Lewis_Howes

If you study the careers of young successful sports executives, you will find a fairly common theme. Many of them (at one point in their careers) have had a blog,  some type of podcast, newsletter or video that has allowed them to demonstrate their passion for their chosen profession.

That’s how @LewisHowes, @BrianGainor and @DarrenHeitner got noticed in the industry. Their respective blogs gave them a platform to showcase their talent in an engaging way. All three have a tremendous, global audience and are recognized as thought leaders in their chosen fields. Creating your own blog can put you on the same path.

Below are five simple options for starting your own sports business blog. Blogs with an acute focus on a single discipline seem to garner the most attention. As you contemplate the various ways to approach blogging, try to identify the areas of business that trigger the most enthusiasm. Move in that direction. When you’re excited about a subject, it’s easier to put in the time and stay committed.

Sports Business Blog Options

There are plenty of options when you want to create a blog in the sports business world. I have listed some below to get you started, along with some successful case studies to go with each option.

Write Your Own Blog

Christy Hammond (@christyjhammond) created her own blog, “Sports PR Blog,” and leveraged that exposure/experience to land a job with the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings as the Community Relations Manager for the team.

Write for Someone Else’s Blog

Lauren McGee (@FutureNBAagent) wrote an article for Sports Launch and got noticed by the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks by the vice president of marketing. As a result, she’s now working in Group Sales/Corporate Sponsorships for the team.

Create a Portal Blog

If you don’t like to write, or have the time, you can always create a blog that serves as a portal to a specific sports business sector. Instead of writing, you simply collect articles and ideas on your chosen field and organize them in a way Google can’t – with your personal commentary.

Create a Q&A Blog

Developing a Q&A blog is another smart option for those who don’t like to write. (Of course you’ll have to write the questions.) Again, the key is to have a specific theme, or a narrow focus within your chosen field. Identify executives in the business sector you are targeting, and reach out to them. Think of this as taking the Informational Interview to the next level.

Create a Video Blog

Vlogging is another option, especially for aspiring sports broadcasters and video producers. It gives you an excellent vehicle for showing your creative side and strong communication skills. And from what I’ve read, video blogs build an audience faster than blogs with just text and pics.

The Benefits of Blogging

There are definitely more than five options to consider as an alternative to blogging. I encourage you to choose the one that you feel most confident you can do – and just go for it. Other than getting noticed, there are several excellent benefits tied to blogging, which I’ve outlined below and Jake Hammes explains above.

A Sports Business Blog…

  • Gives you a relevant reason to contact employers (besides asking for a job)
  • Provides a platform to showcase your skills
  • Forces you to focus on a specific subject (on your way to expertise)
  • Enables you to engage with sports executives on a deeper level
  • Allows you to secure VP-level informational interviews
  • Helps build your career contacts and job leads with the “Hire Authorities”

Final Thought…

There are other ways to get noticed during your sports job search besides creating a blog. You can produce a golf tournament, a speaker series, a networking event or a number of things we’ll tackle another day.

But out of everything you can do to get noticed in the sports job marketplace, creating a blog may be the easiest of all. And it’s free.

If you decide to start a blog, or already have one, I’d love to check it out! Just shoot me a link: chris@sportslaunch.net. As always, I’m in your corner!
